Zen stone sculpture
River stone, rattan, twig
6.75 in. L × 4 in. W × 2.75 in. H
A water-worn granite pebble, speckled gray, bound with pale rattan that gathers into a tight coil on the crown. A dry twig is pinned through the coil and lies across the stone. The wrap is the only intervention—no carving, no base. Weight and stillness of the rock against the lightness of cane and stick.
Wabi-sabi in the ordinary sense: found form, visible making, materials left as they came. Functions as sculpture or paperweight.
Susan Whigham
Works with found stone and plant fiber. This piece is built from three elements only—pebble, rattan, twig—held by wrapping rather than adhesive or hardware.
