Herringbone carved vase
Jerome Ackerman, studio ceramic, marked ACKERMAN.
Full, ovoid vase with a short dark neck and rust lip. The body is carved in a tight herringbone / chevron field that reads like woven straw or a mid-century textile. Buff-to-olive glaze sits in the cuts and leaves the ridges lighter.
Jerome Ackerman (1920–2019) was a California modernist potter and designer. Trained at Wayne State and at Alfred University (MFA, 1952), he and his wife Evelyn moved to Los Angeles and founded Jenev Design Studio, later ERA Industries. Their ceramics, mosaics, tapestries, and woodcarvings helped define postwar West Coast modernism. After years running the business, Jerry returned to the wheel in the late 1980s, making reduction-fired stoneware. These later studio pieces are signed ACKERMAN on the foot.
