Carl Auböck #4105-2 "Vice Versa" Table Lamp on Wire Stand

Werkstätte Carl Auböck, Vienna, mid-20th century

17 × 9.5 in.

A chartreuse conical shade set in a slim black-painted wire frame. The shade is an inverted cone with a pale bound rim; it drops into a circular collar, then the stand pinches inward and flares to a ring foot. A simple white cord drops through the open frame. The shade can be adjusted and placed over the metal frame to direct lighting downward, hence the name "vice versa". The lamp emits a warm glow.

The form belongs to the workshop’s mid-century lighting language—cone shades, light structure, and a lamp that reads as sculpture when off. This example has excellent provenance and would make a great addition to any Auböck collection.

About the designer

Carl Auböck II (1900–1957) trained at the Bauhaus and took over the Vienna metal workshop founded by his father in 1912. Under him the Werkstätte Carl Auböck became known for small objects and lighting that mixed brass, cane, leather, and painted metal with a dry, modern wit. After his death the studio continued under Carl Auböck III; many of the classic lamp types remained in production. The workshop is still active in Vienna.

Painted metal wire frame and paper cone shade (loss of trim to bottom of shade) Dimensions: 17 × 9.5 in.
